Bakhtiar Khattak was born on 6 February 1978 in Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa —, home ground of the Khattak tribe and of the classical Pashto poet Khushal Khan Khattak.

He completed his secondary schooling there before moving to Peshawar for his higher education. Peshawar, then the beating heart of Pashto broadcasting and recording, gave him both an audience and a profession.

A career that began with a medium

Khattak turned professional in 2004, at the moment Pashto-language satellite television arrived and changed what a Pashto artist could be. Where earlier generations reached listeners through radio and cassette, he belonged to the first cohort whose faces, videos and live sessions travelled with their voices — into homes in Peshawar, Kabul, Karachi, Dubai and every diaspora city in between.

The catalogue

Over two decades he has released more than 500 songs and five albums, including solo video albums. His repertoire moves between traditional tappa, folk, ghazal and contemporary arrangements — a range that has kept him relevant across generations of listeners.

Music as peacebuilding

During the years of militancy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pashto musicians faced direct threats, music shops were attacked and live performance largely disappeared from public life. Artists who continued to record and perform helped keep an endangered cultural tradition in the open. Khattak’s involvement in unity and peace projects has extended his role beyond entertainment into cultural stewardship.
